Ryanair Profits Plummet Amidst Soaring Fuel Costs
20 Jul
Summary
- Ryanair's net profit dropped 34 percent in the first quarter.
- Jet fuel prices more than doubled, increasing operating costs.
- Consumer hesitancy and later bookings impacted fare prices.

In the three months ending June 30, 2026, Ryanair reported a 34 percent decrease in net profit, falling to 538 million euros. This downturn was primarily attributed to a substantial increase in jet-fuel costs, which more than doubled for the portion not covered by advance agreements.
Overall operating costs climbed by 11 percent to 3.81 billion euros. Despite a six percent growth in passenger traffic, the airline saw a six percent decrease in fares. This reduction was necessitated by consumer hesitancy influenced by Middle Eastern conflicts, concerns about fuel availability, economic uncertainty, and a trend of later bookings.
Ryanair's chief executive acknowledged that future profits remain vulnerable to escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as fluctuations in unhedged jet-fuel prices and potential macro-economic shocks. The airline's stock experienced a nearly six percent decline in Dublin following the announcement of the profit drop.
