Russia Offers India Energy Amidst Strait of Hormuz Crisis
4 Mar
Summary
- Russia ready to meet India's energy demands during supply disruptions.
- QatarEnergy halted LNG output after attacks on industrial cities.
- Strait of Hormuz closure impacts 31% of seaborne crude oil flows.

In response to escalating energy supply concerns, Russia has declared its readiness to fulfill India's energy requirements should disruptions to supplies continue. This offer follows a significant event on March 2, 2026, when QatarEnergy paused its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and related output. The halt was a direct consequence of an Iranian drone attack that targeted key facilities within Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City. The situation was further exacerbated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime passage between Iran and Oman. This strategic waterway is crucial for global energy transport, with Kpler reporting that approximately 13 million barrels of oil daily traverse it, accounting for 31% of all seaborne crude oil flows. India, while diversifying its energy sources in recent years, including increased purchases from Russia, remains heavily dependent on West Asian countries for its crude oil and LNG imports.
