Russia's EV Boom: Fuel Shortages Drive Switch
10 Jul
Summary
- Fuel shortages in Russia prompt drivers to switch to electric vehicles.
- Electric vehicle sales surged in June due to persistent fuel crises.
- EV commuters report significant cost savings on travel expenses.

Oksana Yasinskaya, an engineer in southeast Moscow, now effortlessly uses her electric hatchback, bypassing lengthy queues at fuel stations. These lines have become a common sight across Russia due to Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure, impacting gasoline and diesel supplies. This situation has led some families, including Yasinskaya's, to purchase electric vehicles (EVs).
Yasinskaya expressed relief at avoiding the "humiliating queue" and saving considerable time, noting her commute costs have fallen by approximately 80%. Analytical agency Autostat reported accelerated sales of new EVs and plug-in hybrids in June. The agency anticipates substantial growth for the currently small EV market if the fuel crisis endures.
While limited charging infrastructure and severe weather remain significant hurdles for EV drivers in Russia, the cost savings are compelling. Yasinskaya's family is considering converting their other car to a hybrid, given its easier charging capabilities at their home outside the city.
