Summary
- Six rural hospitals may receive up to $2.5 million each.
- Federal program offers $162 million for capital improvements.
- Applications are due October 26 for eligible entities.

Six rural hospitals across Massachusetts are positioned to receive significant federal funding, with each facility eligible for up to $2.5 million. This capital is part of an initial $162 million allocated to the state through the Rural Health Transformation Program, a component of a larger five-year, $50 billion federal initiative.
The Executive Office of Health and Human Services has issued a request for applications, with a deadline of October 26. Funding opportunities extend beyond hospitals to include rural health clinics, community-based organizations, federally qualified health centers, and nursing facilities. These entities can apply for initiatives focused on advancing population health, innovating rural care models, developing the workforce, and modernizing facilities.
The first funding period is scheduled from October 30, 2026, to September 30, 2027. State officials are prioritizing "shovel-ready" projects to meet federal obligations, requiring all $162 million to be obligated by the end of October and fully expended by September 2027. Eligible hospitals can use funds for repurposing spaces, enhancing diagnostic and specialty care, improving preventive services, and updating building systems.
