Rivian sued over 'fake' self-driving claims
19 Jun
Summary
- Customers allege Rivian overstated autonomous driving capabilities.
- Lawsuit claims R1T and R1S models lack necessary hardware.
- Rivian declined to comment on the pending legal case.

Customers have filed a class action lawsuit against Rivian, alleging the electric vehicle manufacturer overstated the self-driving features of its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. The lawsuit claims that the initial models were advertised with Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.
According to the plaintiffs, these first-generation vehicles were manufactured without the necessary hardware to support true hands-free driving or Level 3 autonomy. They contend that software updates alone cannot enable the advertised features.
Rivian recently rolled out its "universal hands-free driving" software update late last year. This update is available for the R2 collection and the second generation of the R1 lineup. The company has declined to comment on the pending case.
