Rivian R2 Price Hike: Base Model Delayed, Cost Rises
13 Mar
Summary
- Rivian's base R2 SUV price increased to 'around $45,000'.
- The base model R2 delivery date is now late 2027.
- Previous R2 promises echo Tesla's Model 3 and Cybertruck issues.

Rivian has revised its statements regarding the R2 SUV, with the base model's price now listed as "starting around $45,000" and delivery delayed to late 2027. This change comes after the company removed the "starting at $45,000" wording from its website.
Several factors contributed to this adjustment, including the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit and increased material costs due to tariffs. Rivian is also facing challenges with declining sales of its R1T and R1S models and the significant investment required for its new Georgia factory.
The company is prioritizing the launch of higher-spec R2 models this year, projecting 20,000-25,000 sales by the end of 2026. A "Standard" R2 model, starting at $48,490 with a 345-mile range, is expected in the first half of 2027, while the base model will have a range of approximately 275 miles.
Rivian has implemented internal engineering changes to reduce costs, such as a zonal electrical architecture and fewer electronic control units. These efforts aim to achieve target pricing, learning from cost reductions made on its second-generation R1 vehicles. This situation draws parallels to Tesla's past pricing promises for the Model 3 and the initial pricing of the Cybertruck.
