NHTSA Probes Rivian Over Potential Rear Toe Link Defect
28 May
Summary
- NHTSA is investigating 114,922 Rivian vehicles for rear toe link separation.
- Two owner reports detail sudden lane changes due to the defect.
- One incident involved a collision with another vehicle and barrier.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into 114,922 Rivian vehicles concerning a potential defect in the rear toe link.
This issue affects Rivian's R1S and R1T electric models. The agency received two owner reports detailing instances where the left rear toe link separated during driving, leading to vehicles swerving across multiple lanes.
One reported incident resulted in a collision involving an adjacent vehicle and a roadside barrier. The NHTSA's probe will examine the rear toe link joint's sensitivity to driving and service conditions, along with Rivian's current repair methods.
This development follows a recall in January, where Rivian addressed nearly 20,000 previously serviced R1S and R1T vehicles due to incorrectly assembled rear toe links. The automaker was to replace rear toe-link bolts free of charge.
