17 Sep
Summary
- Hackers posed as government officials to access customer data.
- Hundreds of cryptocurrency customers were affected by the breach.
- A $3 million ransom demand has been issued by the attackers.
Europe's largest financial technology company, Revolut, confirmed last weekend that it fell victim to a sophisticated impersonation scam. Hackers successfully posed as government officials, using a legitimate government email domain to request and obtain personal data from hundreds of Revolut's cryptocurrency customers.
This data breach affected around 680 global customers. One victim, former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès, expressed severe concerns for his family's safety and has contacted law enforcement in Tokyo. He fears potential repercussions due to his address being compromised in the data files.
Reportedly, the hackers are demanding a $3 million ransom for the stolen data. However, Revolut has stated it has not received direct contact or demands from the individuals claiming responsibility. The company has alerted relevant authorities and is assisting the limited number of affected individuals.
