Regina Food For Learning (RFFL), a non-profit dedicated to providing nutrition for hungry schoolchildren, has officially opened its own dedicated facility after nearly 40 years of operation in shared church basements and other borrowed spaces.
Executive Director Lin Gennutt highlighted the new building's capacity for growth, enabling RFFL to serve more schools and neighborhoods. Previously, the organization had to turn away schools due to space limitations. The expanded facility ensures they can meet current needs and accommodate future increases in demand.
This move also presents significant financial efficiencies. The new building includes much-needed storage space, allowing RFFL to buy food in bulk when prices are low and on sale, directly impacting their food costs and budget.
Gennutt noted that food insecurity among children has worsened, with numbers potentially doubling in the last decade. She emphasized the critical link between nutrition and a child's ability to concentrate and learn in school.
Support from donors, including the Downtowners Optimist Club, remains vital for RFFL's operations. The organization expressed gratitude for their ongoing commitment to supporting the learning and well-being of students.
