Retail Traders Surge in Stock Futures Amidst Market Shifts
25 May
Summary
- Retail and HNI traders amassed record net open positions in stock futures.
- Nifty has traded in a range since late February, while mid and smallcaps gained.
- Domestic factors drive mid and smallcap stocks, attracting higher trader participation.

Retail and high networth traders have established new records for their net open positions in stock futures, reaching 28.57 lakh as of Friday. This significant activity stems from the strong performance of mid and smallcap stocks, which have outpaced broader market indices like the Nifty. Since late February, the Nifty has largely traded within a narrow range, presenting limited opportunities for index-based trading.
In contrast, the Nifty Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 indices have shown positive gains, with many individual stocks reaching all-time highs. This divergence is attributed to domestic factors driving the mid and smallcap segments, while benchmark indices are influenced by foreign investor selling and geopolitical uncertainties. Despite government efforts to moderate activity, including a 150% increase in securities transaction tax on futures, trading volumes remain elevated due to higher volatility.
