RBI Rate Hikes on Hold? Inflation Dip Hints at Pause
16 Jul
Summary
- Economists now expect RBI to hold rates through FY27.
- Inflation averaged 3.9% in April-June, below RBI's forecast.
- Some predict rate hikes later in the year, prioritizing growth.

A recent dip in India's inflation figures has led many economists to anticipate that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will hold its policy rates steady through the fiscal year 2027. This shift in expectation follows consumer inflation averaging 3.9% in the first quarter, falling below the RBI's projection of 4.2% for that period. Banks like ANZ and CitiBank have withdrawn their earlier forecasts for a rate hike at the August policy meeting.
Standard Chartered Bank had already adjusted its outlook after the previous policy review. Current analyses suggest a broad consensus among institutions for the RBI to maintain its current policy rate of 5.25% throughout FY27. However, some economists believe that any rate increases, if they occur, would be delayed until later in the fiscal year, indicating a potential prioritization of economic growth over immediate inflation concerns.
This change in forecast is also influenced by moderating crude oil prices. The RBI's inflation projection for FY27 currently stands at 5.1%, which, while above the central bank's 4% target, remains within the permitted flexibility. Nevertheless, risks of higher inflation persist, particularly due to potential El Nino impacts and further oil price surges, with sustained inflation above 5.5% potentially reintroducing the risk of a rate hike.
