RBI Holds Rates Amid Inflation Fears
19 Aug
Summary
- RBI's MPC kept the benchmark repo rate unchanged for the fourth consecutive time.
- Governor cited need for more certainty on inflation trajectory before policy change.
- Focus remains on monitoring energy costs and supply chain impacts on inflation.

The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) opted to keep the benchmark policy rate unchanged for a fourth consecutive time earlier this month. This decision reflects a preference for greater certainty regarding the inflation outlook before implementing any policy adjustments. Governor Sanjay Malhotra highlighted that a monetary response to supply-side shocks is appropriate only when inflation shows signs of generalization, expectations de-anchor, or inflation becomes persistent.
Despite current uncertainties from global conflicts and weather patterns, the Indian economy has demonstrated better-than-expected performance in Q1 of the 2026-27 fiscal year. However, the RBI remains vigilant, acknowledging the persistent risks of rising food, fuel, and input prices feeding into a broad-based inflation increase and potentially de-anchoring expectations. Any concrete evidence of these risks materializing may necessitate policy tightening, according to the Governor's remarks.
