Chip Giants Clash: Arm vs. Qualcomm in Court Again
5 Oct
Summary
- Qualcomm accuses Arm of withholding vital chip testing tools.
- Arm allegedly leaked Qualcomm's threat to terminate a license.
- Qualcomm seeks to end royalty payments potentially worth billions.

A legal battle between chipmaker Qualcomm and chip technology firm Arm Holdings is escalating as Qualcomm accuses Arm of breaching contract terms. The dispute centers on Arm allegedly withholding critical chip testing tools that were due to Qualcomm.
Qualcomm further claims Arm leaked information regarding Qualcomm's 2024 threat to end a key license agreement. This alleged leak reportedly harmed discussions for a potential chip deal between Qualcomm and Meta Platforms. The ongoing trial in Delaware federal court marks another chapter in the contentious relationship between the two companies.
In its lawsuit, Qualcomm, a major Arm customer, is seeking to stop paying royalties to Arm for up to five years. These payments could be worth billions of dollars. However, the court is considering whether to dismiss this specific claim, which might limit Qualcomm's potential damages to a lesser amount.
Arm has denied breaching its contract and argued that Qualcomm's chip deals were speculative and not damaged by the alleged leak. Arm also counter-sued, alleging Qualcomm leaked non-public details about antitrust probes into Arm to the media.
Separately, the court will also hear arguments on whether Arm has negotiated in good faith with Qualcomm for the next generation of Arm's chip technology. Qualcomm's current agreement with Arm is set to continue through 2033. Qualcomm, a significant producer of chips for Android phones, is also expanding into data center chips, while Arm supplies foundational design technology to many chip firms, including competitors.
