These deliveries have been halted since April, following a force majeure notification triggered by disruptions associated with the US-Iran conflict. This situation has severely impacted Qatar's liquefied natural gas exports, reducing them by 96% as of late August. Edison is actively seeking alternative sources for its gas supply, predominantly turning to US providers to compensate for the missing cargoes from Qatar.
Edison holds a substantial long-term contract with QatarEnergy, securing 6.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually for Italy. This supply constitutes approximately 10% of the country's total gas consumption and has been in place since 2009, with a total duration of 25 years. As Europe prepares for the upcoming winter season and aims to fill its gas storage facilities, countries like Germany are particularly focused on ensuring adequate supply, while Italy remains confident in meeting EU targets.
