Qantas Conquers Distance: Non-Stop Sydney-London Flight Set

Qantas is poised to launch the world's first non-stop flight between Sydney and London, a groundbreaking route scheduled to commence in October 2027. This nearly 22-hour journey, utilizing specially designed Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, aims to eliminate stopovers and conquer the "tyranny of distance" that has long characterized travel between Australia and the UK. The airline's CEO, Vanessa Hudson, expressed strong confidence in the venture's success, highlighting customer willingness to pay a premium for direct travel, citing the Perth to London route as precedent.

This ultra-long-haul flight represents a significant milestone in aviation, building on Qantas's historical "Kangaroo route" which once spanned four days and seven stops. The new service will feature a higher proportion of premium seating, with nearly half of the seats dedicated to premium economy, business, or first class. To address passenger well-being on such an extensive journey, Qantas is increasing legroom in economy and introducing a dedicated wellness area for stretching and movement.

The development of Project Sunrise, the initiative behind this non-stop route, has been years in the making, overcoming numerous delays. The first of twelve A350-1000 aircraft will be delivered to Qantas in April 2026. This launch follows a period of significant challenges for Qantas, including substantial penalties for misleading customers and a record fine related to industrial disputes. The airline has been focused on rebuilding trust and improving customer experience and punctuality.
