Summary
- New 'Smart Cinema' format offers significantly lower ticket prices.
- Cinema construction costs are reduced by nearly 50% per screen.
- Experience aims to be aspirational yet affordable for local audiences.

PVR INOX has introduced 'Smart Cinema,' a novel movie-going format designed for India's developing urban centers. This new venture aims to deliver a modern, tech-integrated cinematic experience at accessible price points. The initiative was unveiled at a Mumbai multiplex by Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, and Renaud Palliere.
The 'Smart Cinema' concept focuses on affordability, with ticket prices projected to be 30-35% less than those in comparable larger cities. For instance, ticket prices in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, the location of the first 'Smart Cinema,' will be significantly lower than in Patna. Spend per head is also expected to be 20-25% lower.
Ajay Bijli highlighted that this strategy caters to the diverse Indian market, ensuring value for consumers in towns like Muzaffarpur. The reduced cost per screen, around Rs. 1.9 crore compared to Rs. 3-4 crore for typical upscale cinemas, allows for competitive pricing without compromising on essential facilities such as legroom, seating, or audio-visual quality.
Furthermore, the F&B offerings will be curated to suit local market tastes and affordability. PVR INOX aims to provide an experience that is superior to current offerings in these smaller markets, making it both aspirational and attainable. The cinemas will screen the latest releases, including Hollywood films, in appropriate languages or dubbed versions.
