Pune Avoids Losing MH-12 Identity with New Format

This new digit-letter format, if approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), would be the first of its kind in India. While awaiting final approval, Pune's RTO introduced a temporary 'MH-61' code for new vehicle registrations to prevent delays.
Owners receiving the temporary MH-61 registration are anticipated to have the option to switch to the new MH-12 series for a nominal fee. This proposal follows concerns from residents about losing the MH-12 identity, prompting intervention from Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol.
The proposed system ensures Pune can continue using its familiar registration prefix while accommodating its growing vehicle population. The next step involves a draft notification for public suggestions before the format is finalized.
