Pune is set to experience a significant enhancement in its public transportation system as new metro lines are slated for inauguration in May and July. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the Hinjewadi metro line will commence operations in May, alongside an additional 11 kilometers of metro track within the city.
Further bolstering Pune's connectivity, plans are in motion to extend the metro line to the future Purandar airport. Fadnavis emphasized the state's commitment to alleviating traffic congestion by accelerating metro rail construction, with a substantial portion of the planned 80-kilometer network now nearing completion. The long-term vision includes a comprehensive 200-kilometer metro network for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Inaugurating Metro Bhavan, the headquarters for the MahaMetro Pune Project, Fadnavis noted the rapid progress despite a late start. He also mentioned the consideration of underground tunneling for uninterrupted urban mobility and highlighted the current daily ridership of approximately 25,000 passengers as a testament to the metro's popularity.
