Protein Prices Soar: "Proteinflation" Hits Gym-Goers
24 Sep
Summary
- Protein powder prices have doubled and tripled in recent years.
- Consumers are rationing supplements due to the extreme cost increase.
- Supply chain issues and increased demand are driving up prices.
The price of protein supplements has seen a dramatic increase, with consumers experiencing significant financial strain. Amarpreet Singh, a 30-year-old from London, noted that a 4.5kg bag of whey protein, which cost around £60 in 2020, has now reached £170. This phenomenon has been dubbed "proteinflation" among gym enthusiasts. The demand for protein has broadened considerably beyond traditional bodybuilders, with high-protein versions of everyday foods now commonplace.
Younger consumers, like 19-year-old Evie Lewis from Manchester, are also affected. She has resorted to rationing her protein powder, which costs £32.99 for a 420g tub, due to financial constraints as a student. Max Longman, 32, also from Manchester, has seen his monthly spending on whey protein increase from £45 to £60 over the past year. The market is further impacted by the rising use of weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro, which typically encourage higher protein intake to preserve muscle mass during weight loss.
Global supply chain issues have failed to meet this growing demand. European prices for a common type of high-protein whey were 130% higher in late August compared to the previous year, and over four times their level from three years prior. While the UK market is closely linked to Europe, similar price hikes are observed. Manufacturers face challenges in increasing production due to the specialized equipment required for high-protein whey.
In response, some companies are exploring alternative protein sources. Warrior, a UK sports nutrition firm, has increased its whey protein powder price from £12.50 to £17.99 and is subsidizing costs while developing new products using cheaper protein alternatives. The higher dairy protein costs are also affecting other sectors, such as infant formula. While wholesale prices have recently begun to stabilize, they remain significantly elevated compared to previous years.
