Poundstretcher Faces Rent Cuts: UK High Street Strain Deepens
31 Mar
Summary
- Poundstretcher plans rent reductions on 50 stores.
- Another 50 unprofitable stores may see rents eliminated.
- Fortress provided £30 million in financing for working capital.

Fortress Investment Group is initiating a major restructuring of Poundstretcher Ltd., a discount retailer it acquired two years ago. This plan, which requires court approval, aims to alleviate financial pressure on the struggling business.
The proposed restructuring involves significant rent adjustments for Poundstretcher's store portfolio. Approximately 50 stores could see their rents reduced by as much as 25% for a period of three years. Furthermore, the plan seeks to eliminate rent entirely for another 50 locations that are currently operating at a loss.
Landlords who agree to these concessions will be offered equity upside in Poundstretcher. The restructuring is also expected to reduce a portion of Fortress's debt associated with the retailer. In 2024, Poundstretcher reported a pre-tax loss of £9.9 million, attributing it to a difficult retail environment. This news comes after Poundland, another UK discount retailer, underwent a substantial restructuring in 2025.
Earlier this month, Fortress extended a £30 million financing facility to Poundstretcher. This cash infusion is designated for working capital and can be accessed by the company as needed.
