Poundstretcher's Court Win: Landlords Face Rent Cuts
12 Jun
Summary
- Court approved Poundstretcher's restructuring plan, avoiding administration.
- Landlords face rent reductions ranging from 25% to 100%.
- Fortress Investment Group provides financial support and extends loans.

A UK court has approved a critical restructuring plan for Poundstretcher Ltd., the discount retailer backed by Fortress Investment Group. This decision provides the struggling company with a lifeline to continue operations amidst significant financial challenges.
The court sanctioned the plan, overriding objections from six classes of creditors, primarily landlords who will see their rents reduced by 25% to 100% on approximately 100 stores. The profitability of each location will determine the extent of the rent cut.
Fortress Investment Group, which acquired Poundstretcher in 2024, is offering substantial support. This includes extending a zero-interest shareholder loan until 2029 and forgiving about £8.9 million ($12 million) in intercompany debt. The company had previously faced a cash crisis, necessitating a £30 million financing facility from Fortress.
Poundstretcher operates over 300 stores across the UK and employs more than 3,000 people. The retailer argued in court that failure to secure approval by July 10 would trigger defaults and lead to administration. The company stated that the approved plan will "strengthen Poundstretcher's long-term position and help create a company that can grow sustainably."
