Pothole Repairs Get 5-Year Guarantee Demand
15 Jan
Summary
- Campaigners want a five-year warranty on all non-emergency pothole fixes.
- AA responded to 613,638 road damage incidents last year alone.
- Drivers faced £645 million in vehicle repair costs from potholes in 2025.

Campaigners are pushing for a mandatory five-year guarantee on all non-emergency pothole repairs, aiming to significantly enhance the quality of road surfaces across the UK. This proposal, spearheaded by The Pothole Partnership, seeks to ensure contractors are held accountable for the longevity of their work, moving beyond short-term fixes.
Marking National Pothole Day, the AA revealed it attended 613,638 road damage-related incidents in the past year, averaging 1,681 pothole call-outs daily. These road defects led to an estimated £645 million in vehicle repair bills for UK drivers in 2025. Common issues include damaged suspension and wheels, with average repair costs reaching £350 per incident.
Freedom of Information requests exposed a lack of standardized pothole repair methods, with 78 different approaches used by councils nationwide. While the government has committed £7.3 billion for local road maintenance over four years, campaigners argue that a five-year warranty would be a significant 'game-changer' for road maintenance standards.
