PlayStation Gamers Could Get £162 Refund in Landmark Case
9 Mar
Summary
- Sony faces a £2 billion lawsuit alleging overcharging for digital games.
- 12 million PlayStation owners could receive £162 each.
- Purchases between August 2016 and February 2026 are eligible for the claim.

A substantial lawsuit worth two billion pounds has been filed against Sony, potentially leading to compensation for millions of PlayStation owners. Consumer Voice alleges that Sony has overcharged gamers by an estimated 20% on digital game and add-on content purchases compared to physical versions.
The claim asserts that Sony deliberately suppressed competition within its digital marketplace, thereby inflating prices. UK consumers who purchased digital games or add-ons from the PlayStation Store between August 19, 2016, and February 12, 2026, are automatically part of the lawsuit unless they actively opt out. Non-UK residents who made eligible purchases while in the UK must opt in.
Sony's defense argues that its distribution model is necessary to prevent security and privacy risks inherent in third-party download stores. The trial, which commenced on March 2, is expected to conclude by mid-May, with a ruling anticipated up to six months later.
