Planet Fitness's Growth Hits Headwinds

Planet Fitness, a dominant player in the budget fitness industry, is encountering significant headwinds that are slowing its membership growth. The company acknowledged a "slower-than-expected start" in net member acquisition during the first quarter of 2026. Facing internal and external pressures, Planet Fitness opted to pause a planned price increase on its premium Black Card membership, initiating a broader pricing review.

Further analysis of second-quarter 2026 earnings revealed that a 1.7% increase in same-club sales was solely due to rate adjustments, not a rise in member volume. This indicates a stall in new memberships. In response to these trends and consumer price sensitivity, the fitness chain is preparing to test a national $10 Classic Card promotion later in the current quarter.

Adding to these challenges, Planet Fitness confirmed plans to close five locations in New York, Florida, Indiana, Vermont, and South Carolina by late 2026. Industry experts suggest these closures, while a small fraction of its total footprint, reflect the end of an easy growth phase for even market leaders.

While consumers continue to prioritize fitness spending, there's a noticeable shift towards boutique fitness and specialized training, impacting mass-market brands.
