PhonePe Clarifies: Wallet Inactivity vs. UPI
20 Jun
Summary
- PhonePe wallet inactivity fees do not impact linked bank accounts or UPI.
- Wallet and UPI activities are tracked separately by PhonePe.
- Users are notified 15 days before any wallet inactivity fees are deducted.

PhonePe has issued clarifications regarding inactivity fees on its digital wallets, assuring users that their linked bank accounts and UPI transactions remain unaffected. These notifications pertain solely to the PhonePe Wallet, a prepaid payment instrument (PPI), and do not extend to UPI payments, which directly debit funds from a user's bank account.
The company highlighted a common misunderstanding: the PhonePe Wallet, UPI account, and general PhonePe app usage are distinct products operating under different rules. Inactivity fees will not be deducted from bank accounts if a wallet balance is insufficient; instead, the wallet itself will not show a negative balance.
Users who actively use PhonePe for UPI payments like QR-code transactions or bill payments may still receive wallet inactivity alerts. This is because wallet activity and UPI activity are tracked independently. A wallet can be deemed inactive even if the user frequently utilizes the app for other services.
PhonePe provides affected users with a 15-day advance notification before any inactivity fee is charged. This period allows customers to reactivate their wallet, add funds, withdraw eligible balances, or close the wallet if they no longer intend to use it.
Reactivating a wallet does not necessarily require upgrading to Full KYC status; OTP verification and a transaction are often sufficient. Furthermore, cashback rewards are typically credited to a separate gift card balance, distinct from the PhonePe Wallet, and are not subject to wallet inactivity deductions.
These wallet inactivity fees are a standard practice among some prepaid payment instrument providers to cover operational costs for dormant accounts. The key takeaway is that such fees apply exclusively to the PhonePe Wallet balance and do not impact bank accounts or UPI transactions.
