Summary

- New contract vehicle integrates licenses across military and Coast Guard.
- Effort aims to cut duplicative spending and drive down software costs.

The U.S. Department of Defense has initiated a major consolidation of its enterprise software licenses, entering into a five-year agreement valued at $9.69 billion. This strategic move, announced on Wednesday, consolidates licenses for Microsoft and other software across various military branches, the intelligence community, and the U.S. Coast Guard into a singular contract vehicle.
This initiative, termed the Core Enterprise Technology Agreement, is designed to significantly reduce redundant spending that has accumulated over years of fragmented procurement. Officials highlighted that the funds for this agreement are already allocated within existing budgets, used for purchasing Microsoft 365 subscriptions, cloud, and on-premises licenses. By unifying these purchases, the department aims to harness its collective purchasing power to achieve lower costs.
