Summary
- Multi-Scheme Framework allows multiple schemes in one pension account.
- Gig and platform workers benefit from e-Shramik model innovations.
- Post-retirement investment extended to age 85 with new flexibility.

The pension sector is undergoing significant reforms aimed at boosting subscriber engagement and post-retirement planning. A key innovation is the Multi-Scheme Framework, enabling individuals to manage multiple schemes within a single pension account. For gig and platform workers, the e-Shramik model offers tailored solutions.
Post-retirement flexibility has also been enhanced, allowing subscribers to remain invested until age 85, an extension from the previous limit of 75. New guidelines permit a larger portion of the lump-sum withdrawal to stay invested, with equity exposure gradually decreasing during the withdrawal phase.
Despite these advancements, the pension industry faces challenges in distribution and awareness, lagging behind mutual funds and insurance in growth. Incentives for distributors are being realigned to improve traction, with recent subscriber growth showing a positive trend.
Structural opportunities for accelerated growth include exploring portability between EPF and NPS, a mechanism currently absent at the EPFO level. This could significantly enhance NPS adoption, especially as many Public Sector Undertakings have already transitioned their superannuation funds to NPS.
HDFC Pension aims to triple its subscriber base in three to four years by exploring new segments like gig workers, agriculture, and MSMEs, fortifying its Corporate NPS offerings, and strengthening technological adoption. Corporate NPS is projected to be a key growth driver due to its tax benefits for employers and employees.
