Nelson's Pendle Rise: Demolition for Modern Retail
11 Mar
Summary
- Pendle Rise, a 1960s shopping centre, will be demolished in April.
- A £25m scheme will replace it with a new complex and car park.
- The transformation aims to attract investment and create jobs.

Nelson's Pendle Rise shopping centre, originally opened in the 1960s, is scheduled for demolition in April. This marks a significant transition for the town as the aging Arndale Centre makes way for a comprehensive redevelopment.
The £25m Nelson Town Deal scheme, supported by the government, will introduce a contemporary shopping complex, a 150-space car park, and landscaped outdoor areas. This initiative is designed to stimulate economic growth.
According to Asjad Mahmood, deputy leader of Pendle Borough Council, the project aims to "attract investment, create jobs and provide our residents and visitors with a place to enjoy spending time in." The council confirmed that internal electricity would be disconnected by the end of next week.
Stephen Barnes, chairman of Nelson Town Deal, expressed enthusiasm, stating the project moves closer to fulfilling its vision of delivering a "new and exciting shopping and leisure time experience." Asbestos removal is planned for completion by the end of March, bringing the site closer to transformation.
While many anticipate the modernization, some residents have expressed mixed feelings. There is a desire among some locals to preserve elements of the original centre, such as a floor mosaic featuring Admiral Nelson's compass, for future generations.
