Panasonic Powers Zoox Robotaxis with Advanced Batteries

Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. has entered into a multi-year agreement with Zoox, the autonomous ride-hailing company owned by Amazon. This collaboration will see Panasonic Energy supply its latest 2170 cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells, beginning in early 2026, to power Zoox's growing fleet of robotaxis. Zoox has developed a unique robotaxi and recently commenced serial production of these vehicles at its new facility in Hayward, California.

The introduction of these advanced battery cells is critical for Zoox's high-performance robotaxis, offering superior energy density and proven safety. Panasonic Energy boasts an exceptional track record, having supplied billions of cells globally without vehicle recalls attributed to battery issues. The supply will initially originate from Japan, with plans to expand to Panasonic Energy's Kansas factory.

This partnership positions Panasonic Energy to capitalize on the rapidly expanding robotaxi market, which is projected to grow significantly. The US market alone is expected to surge at a compound annual growth rate exceeding 70% through 2030. Zoox's recent launch of a fully driverless ride-hailing service in Las Vegas marks a pioneering achievement in urban transportation.
