Iran War Boosts Panama Canal LNG Shipments
21 Mar
Summary
- Canal operates at full capacity, handling 36-38 vessels daily.
- Iran war increases demand for LNG tankers, especially from U.S. ports.
- Canal will offer one daily LNG tanker slot, up from four per month.

The Panama Canal is currently operating at its peak capacity, managing the passage of 36 to 38 vessels each day. This high traffic is partly fueled by increased demand from owners and operators of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers.
The ongoing conflict in Iran is a significant factor contributing to this demand, especially for vessels loading at U.S. ports. The waterway, already experiencing growth in LNG traffic prior to the conflict, is adapting to the rising need.
To accommodate this trend, the canal is preparing to allocate one passage slot daily specifically for LNG tankers. This represents a substantial increase from the previous schedule, which allowed only four LNG tanker passages per month.
