LPG Crisis: Gas Hits Rs700/kg Amid Supply Snarls
2 Nov
Summary
- LPG unavailable at official Rs294/kg price point.
- Prices in Balochistan skyrocket to Rs700 per kg.
- Petroleum minister assures ample gas supply for winter.

Pakistan is experiencing a critical shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as winter approaches, exacerbated by the ongoing suspension of supplies through the Taftan border. The official price of LPG has been raised by Rs14 to Rs294 per kilogramme, but consumers report it is unavailable at this government-notified rate.
Retail prices have consequently soared, with reports indicating costs as high as Rs700 per kilogramme in parts of Balochistan, including Quetta. In major urban centers like Karachi and Lahore, prices range from Rs520 to Rs580 per kg, while Peshawar sees rates between Rs600 and Rs650 per kg. Consumers in Lahore expressed concern over prices reaching Rs600 per kg, far exceeding the official rate.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik attributed fluctuating oil and gas prices partly to global uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz. He reassured the public that Pakistan has sufficient gas supplies arriving from Qatar and expects ample availability through December and January. The minister also noted government initiatives to provide subsidized petrol to low-income individuals.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan LPG Marketers Association has raised concerns about a proposed policy that could increase LPG prices by 25-30%, arguing it was formulated without stakeholder consultation. They advocate for deregulation to mitigate the impact on consumers and businesses.
