Orion Resource Partners has finalized its largest fund to date, raising about $2.2 billion to finance the construction and acquisition of mining projects. This new fund, Orion Mine Finance Fund IV, is specifically designed to assist governments in securing critical supplies of metals and minerals essential for their economies.
The firm's founder, Oskar Lewnowski, stated that this fund is the largest in Orion's 13-year history, exceeding previous fundraises. It has already committed 61% of its capital to global projects. A significant portion of this fund, $600 million, is allocated to the Orion Critical Mineral Consortium, a venture with the U.S. International Development Finance Corp. and ADQ, an Abu Dhabi sovereign-wealth fund.
This consortium aims to secure sources and supply chains for vital minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and copper for the U.S. and allied nations. Orion has also established partnerships in Saudi Arabia to develop the kingdom's mining industry and is reportedly negotiating a substantial stake in Glencore's mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The increased demand for minerals used in renewable energy and technology drives investor interest. However, the industry faces challenges like labor shortages and regulatory delays. Lewnowski highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships and attracting new talent to maintain operational knowledge within the sector.
