Celebrity Platform Cameo Wins Legal Battle Against OpenAI
17 Feb
Summary
- Judge blocked OpenAI's use of 'Cameo' in its Sora video app.
- Cameo argued OpenAI's feature would confuse consumers.
- A preliminary injunction was granted to the celebrity video platform.

A federal judge in California has issued a preliminary injunction against OpenAI, prohibiting the use of the name "Cameo" for a feature within its video generation app, Sora. The ruling, made on February 17, 2026, favors the celebrity video platform Cameo in a trademark lawsuit.
U.S. District Judge Eumi Lee determined that OpenAI's "Cameo" feature, which allows users to create and share virtual likenesses, is likely to cause consumer confusion. This decision follows a shorter-term restraining order granted to Cameo in November 2025.
Cameo asserted that OpenAI's choice of the name "Cameo" disregarded the obvious market confusion it would create. The platform argued that Sora's ability to generate celebrity "Cameos" directly competes with its own services.
OpenAI, an AI giant, is facing multiple intellectual property challenges. These include copyright lawsuits related to AI training data and criticism over voice and image style usage without permission. Separately, OpenAI is being sued by OverDrive over the "Sora" name trademark rights.
