Hannah Wong, OpenAI's chief communications officer, has informed the company of her decision to depart in January, concluding a five-year tenure. She joined OpenAI in 2021 and was pivotal in managing the company's communications as it experienced explosive growth with products like ChatGPT.
Wong's leadership was particularly critical during the November 2023 period when CEO Sam Altman was briefly ousted and subsequently reinstated, an event the company internally refers to as "the blip." She officially took on the CCO role in August 2024.
OpenAI's VP of communications, Lindsey Held, will assume interim leadership of the communications team, with VP of marketing Kate Rouch managing the search for Wong's successor. Wong expressed gratitude for her formative years at OpenAI and looks forward to spending more time with her family.
