Omron Bets Big on India: New Factory Targets Huge BP Monitor Market
30 Oct
Summary
- Omron Healthcare opened its first Indian factory in Chennai on Friday.
- The new plant aims for 3 million BP monitor units annually by 2028.
- India has over 300 million hypertension cases with low BP monitor use.
Omron Healthcare inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in India on Friday, October 30, 2026, located in Chennai. This significant expansion aims to diversify production beyond its sole Vietnam factory and tap into India's substantial domestic market for blood pressure monitors.
The new plant is projected to achieve an annual production capacity of approximately 3 million units by 2028, primarily blood pressure monitors. This capacity could further increase to 3.5 million units with three-shift operations. Initially, the factory will focus on BP monitors, with plans to introduce other products like nebulizers later.
Omron's strategic focus on India is driven by the country's immense healthcare needs. Over 300 million people in India suffer from hypertension, yet the penetration of blood pressure monitors remains below 5%. The company anticipates that increased awareness will nearly double home BP monitor usage to about 10% by 2030.
While the Chennai facility will boost local production, Omron Healthcare does not currently plan to reduce prices for its products. The plant is also intended to supply the European market, complementing existing shipments from Vietnam, and is expected to employ around 120 individuals by November 2026.
