A significant nursery chain, Busy Bees Nurseries, has been identified among hundreds of businesses criticized for minimum wage violations. The company, based in Staffordshire, failed to pay £485,374.05 to 9,056 workers over the 2023 and 2024 calendar years. Busy Bees stated the underpayments resulted from inadvertent errors, which have since been corrected, and apologized to affected staff.
The Department for Business and Trade's list highlights that employers owe workers more than £7.3 million in wages, with 389 companies fined a total of £12.6 million. Busy Bees' underpayment alone represents a substantial portion of the total affected workers. ISS Mediclean Limited was identified as owing the largest sum, amounting to £1,506,959.68 to 6,580 workers.
Busy Bees operates numerous nurseries across England, Scotland, and Wales. From next month, minimum wage rates will rise, with those aged 21 and over earning at least £12.71 per hour. Business Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized that most businesses comply with wage rules, and failure to do so is unfair to compliant employers.
