Nova Sustainable Fuels has received provincial environmental approval for a significant energy project on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. This facility is designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel and renewable methanol, crucial low-carbon alternatives for the transportation sector. The project, backed by Octopus Energy Generation, marks a major step in developing green energy solutions.
The initial phase involves establishing a production facility near Isaacs Harbour, which will utilize biomass from the forestry industry and water from nearby lakes. Future plans include developing wind and solar farms to power the plant, which will require a separate environmental assessment. The company anticipates the construction phase will take approximately three years.
The project, estimated to cost between $4 billion and $6 billion, has been granted approval with specific conditions. These include commencing the project within two years, submitting further conservation data, and developing a plan for engagement with the Mi'kmaq community. The facility is projected to have a lifespan of 50 years.
