Northeast Winter Fuel Crisis Looms

An emergency trucking waiver in the Northeast has been extended by the US government through January 15, aiming to bolster propane, natural gas, and heating oil supplies. This declaration waives regulations concerning driver rest periods, allowing for continuous distribution of heating fuels during a period of anticipated cold weather and a key industrial plant disruption.

The critical situation stems from an electrical incident on November 19 at Energy Transfer LP's Marcus Hook terminal in Pennsylvania. The resulting outage temporarily halted propane loading for three days, leading to customers being placed on allocation and receiving only 70% of their contracted purchases, as reported by the National Propane Gas Association.

Despite initial concerns, fuel stockpiles and alternative sourcing have so far minimized the impact on consumers and prices. Propane inventories on the East Coast remain stable compared to the previous year, with only minor retail price increases observed. A forecast of freezing air and potential snow from an Alberta Clipper storm highlights the urgency of maintaining fuel flow.
