Nissan Altima: Sedan's Farewell Tour Begins

For over 30 years, the Nissan Altima has been a staple in American automotive landscapes. However, its future is becoming increasingly focused on an eventual departure. Nissan's North American product chief indicated the Altima will "soon depart," with the Sentra poised to absorb its role in the company's shrinking sedan offerings.

Despite initial reports of an imminent end, Nissan has confirmed plans for a 2027 Altima model. This suggests the sedan is not disappearing immediately, though the final model year and production end date remain unconfirmed as of 2026.

Introduced in June 1992, the Altima replaced the Stanza and evolved through six generations, serving as practical family transportation. Its core appeal was offering midsize space and utility without a luxury price tag, making it a near-invisible yet essential part of daily life for millions.

The shift away from the Altima aligns with a broader industry trend where buyers increasingly prefer crossover vehicles over sedans. Nissan's popular Rogue and Kicks models are filling this demand, leaving the Altima positioned between smaller sedans and larger SUVs.

The 2026 Altima, starting at $27,580, offers a practical package with a 2.5-liter engine, available all-wheel drive, and up to 36 mpg highway. Its departure signifies the loss of an affordable, efficient option in a segment already dwindling with models like the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu having already ceased production.
