Nike and Lululemon Dismiss Mirror Patent Lawsuit
17 Sep
Summary
- Nike and Lululemon agreed to dismiss a patent lawsuit filed by Nike.
- Nike had accused Lululemon's Mirror system of infringing its patents.
- A tribunal previously invalidated five of Nike's six challenged patents.
Nike and Lululemon have agreed to a mutual dismissal of a patent lawsuit, concluding a legal dispute over Lululemon's Mirror home workout system. Nike had initiated the legal action in 2022, alleging that the Mirror system infringed upon six of its patents. These patents covered technologies for fitness equipment and smartphone applications, designed to monitor exertion levels and user performance.
Lululemon, which acquired Mirror in July 2020 for approximately $453 million, denied Nike's allegations. The case saw a significant development when a US Patent and Trademark Office tribunal invalidated key parts of five of the six patents in question. Nike's appeals against two of these decisions were unsuccessful earlier this year.
This Mirror-related litigation is separate from another patent dispute between the two companies. In that case, Nike had sued Lululemon over alleged infringement of sneaker structure patents. Although a jury initially found Lululemon liable, a judge later overturned the verdict, deeming the patent invalid. Both parties agreed to dismiss Nike's appeal in that separate case in May.
