Nielsen Delays Gauge Amidst Streaming Data Concerns
20 Mar
Summary
- Nielsen postponed its monthly Gauge report release.
- New data caused client concern over streaming audience numbers.
- Methodology changes are being pushed to the fall season.

Measurement firm Nielsen has announced a delay in releasing its "Gauge" report, a key monthly overview of television viewership across linear and digital screens. This decision follows concerns from some clients regarding a recent apparent decrease in streaming audiences, attributed to new data integrated into Nielsen's analysis.
Initially slated for release on March 24, 2026, the "Gauge" and "Media Distributor Gauge" reports will now be issued in April with the same methodology used in January. Nielsen stated that no methodological changes would be applied to the February report to minimize trend breaks. These methodological updates, including the integration of new data from the DASH study, are now scheduled for the fall season.
The DASH study, developed in partnership with NORC at the University of Chicago, provides insights into how U.S. households consume TV and streaming media. Concerns arose as this data could potentially adjust the reported number of households watching traditional TV upwards while showing a reduction in overall streaming audiences.
Nielsen acknowledged that opinions diverge among its clients but believes this phased approach is the least disruptive path for the industry. The company aims to better align "The Gauge" with evolving viewing behaviors and data sources, including "Big Data" from smart TVs, over the long term.
