27 Jun
Summary
- A new fund aims to improve banking services in areas affected by branch losses.
- The initiative supports projects strengthening in-person financial services in towns and villages.
- Rural residents and businesses are struggling with increased travel for basic banking needs.

A dedicated fund has been established to improve banking services in communities experiencing a decline in branch access. The initiative, spearheaded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (YNYCA), invites organizations to apply for support. It aims to strengthen in-person financial provisions in towns and villages where withdrawing or depositing money has become increasingly challenging.
Mayor David Skaith emphasized that maintaining access to banking services is vital for residents, businesses, and community prosperity. He noted that as services shift online, rural populations often face longer journeys for essential financial tasks. This trend leaves many with fewer options to manage their finances, while businesses still depend on face-to-face banking interactions.
The fund will support various banking needs, including cash withdrawals and deposits, business banking, and everyday account management. YNYCA indicated that particular attention is being given to areas such as Bentham, Filey, and Whitby, where investment is expected to yield the most significant impact. Collaboration among organizations and partnerships is strongly encouraged for this program.
