In a move to tackle congestion and air pollution, new enforcement cameras have been installed along a major motorway in the Black Country. The cameras are designed to monitor the painted yellow box junctions at one of the busiest intersections in the area, with the aim of improving traffic flow and air quality.
Sandwell Council has confirmed that the cameras will be placed at Junction 1 of the motorway in West Bromwich, where yellow box markings are used to keep the area clear for emergency vehicles and turning traffic. Drivers are only allowed to enter the yellow box when there is enough space for their car to fit on the other side, or when waiting to turn right.
The council has been granted Moving Traffic Contravention powers by the Department for Transport, allowing them to issue penalty charge notices to motorists who illegally stop in the yellow box. Fines of up to £160 could be imposed, though experts have criticized the system as a "cash cow" with many problematic yellow boxes across the country.
The cameras are expected to be operational later this year or in early 2026, providing a new tool for Sandwell Council to improve road safety, air quality, and network management in the area.
