Gartner Warns: 80% of Neoclouds May Vanish by 2030
17 Oct
Summary
- 80% of neocloud providers may cease operations by 2030.
- Massive AI infrastructure spending may not be recouped.
- Neoclouds face high debt and rapidly depreciating assets.

Technology research firm Gartner forecasts a significant consolidation within the neocloud sector, predicting that over 80% of these specialized AI cloud providers will not survive independently by 2030. This projection stems from concerns that the projected cumulative AI revenue of $3.6 trillion by 2030 may fall far short of the nearly $1 trillion expected to be spent on AI infrastructure this year, plus an additional $6 trillion between 2027 and 2030.
Unlike established hyperscalers such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure, neoclouds focus exclusively on AI workloads and depend heavily on immediate returns from their infrastructure investments. They finance these build-outs largely through debt, creating substantial debt service burdens. Furthermore, their primary assets, such as Nvidia GPUs, have relatively short economic useful lives of approximately six years, increasing financial risk.
Gartner's analysis suggests that the gap between AI infrastructure spending and anticipated revenue will lead to substantial write-offs in the AI data center space. The firm highlights that neoclouds require high revenue generation to cover capital expenditures and financing costs, a target that appears increasingly unattainable given current market projections. This precarious financial position makes the sector a high-risk investment area.
