NC Gas Tax Holiday: A Temporary Win for Drivers?
19 Oct
Summary
- North Carolina now has the lowest average gas prices nationwide.
- Diesel prices remain significantly higher compared to last year.
- Geopolitical tensions could cause gas prices to rise again.
North Carolina currently boasts the lowest average gas prices nationwide, following the suspension of the state's gas tax. This legislative action, signed into law on Friday, October 9, 2026, began to impact prices about a week later as stations sold through their taxed fuel inventory. While prices have fallen, some consumers, like Hayden Epperson, still find them prohibitively expensive compared to daily needs.
For commuters and those in agriculture, the relief is mixed. Epperson noted that prices are still much higher than the $2.78 per gallon for unleaded and $3.52 per gallon for diesel recorded on October 18, 2025. Farmer's wife Lisa Penny highlighted the strenuous cost of diesel, impacting their ability to keep produce prices low.
Petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan explained that the immediate price drop wasn't 41 cents, as some expected, because the tax suspension is only one factor. Oil prices fluctuate daily, and recent increases have been noticeable. He further cautioned that ongoing geopolitical tensions, such as those involving Iran, make future price predictions impossible.
Even with the tax temporarily removed, the price of oil can surge due to international developments. The gas tax is scheduled to be reinstated on December 1, 2026, leaving many to wonder how long the current price stability will last.
