Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has officially commenced commercial operations, marking a significant expansion of Mumbai's aviation infrastructure. Developed by Adani Airports Holdings Limited, the airport aims to ease congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and establish a multi-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The inaugural IndiGo flight from Bengaluru landed on Thursday, initiating a new era for air travel in the region.
On its first day, NMIA successfully handled 48 flights connecting nine domestic destinations, serving over 4,000 passengers. This strong initial demand highlights the operational readiness of the new facility. Chairman Gautam Adani celebrated the launch, emphasizing NMIA as a symbol of India's growing infrastructure capabilities and its commitment to progress and speed in development.
The launch event featured cultural performances showcasing Maharashtra's heritage and recognized national heroes. Farmers, underprivileged families, and individuals with disabilities experienced their first flights through a special initiative. India Post also released a commemorative stamp to mark the occasion, symbolizing NMIA as a new gateway for Mumbai and India.
