Nashville Restaurants Brace for Storm's Financial Fallout
17 Feb
Summary
- Winter storm knocked out power for 250,000 customers.
- Restaurant sales plunged 88% during the ice storm.
- Independent restaurants operate on slim 3% to 5% profit margins.

Winter Storm Fern recently impacted Middle Tennessee, leading to widespread power outages for approximately 250,000 Nashville Electric Service customers. This disruption caused significant financial strain on local restaurants, which already operate on notoriously thin profit margins, often between 3% to 5%.
Data revealed a dramatic shift in consumer behavior, with grocery store sales surging 113% as residents prepared for the storm. Conversely, restaurant sales experienced an 88% drop on January 25 compared to the previous year, as diners stayed home.
Businesses like Butcher & Bee estimated losses of $60,000 to $70,000 in revenue and up to $10,000 in spoiled perishables. The restaurant's owners sought a two-week rent extension but were denied, ultimately covering their $25,000 monthly lease with personal funds.
Other establishments, such as Tutti da Gio's Hermitage location, cited the storm as the final factor in their closure, exacerbating existing staffing and economic challenges. Chef David Breeden of Bad Idea noted that a week without service can devastate a restaurant's entire month.
Amidst the difficulties, many Nashville restaurants demonstrated resilience and community spirit. Prince's Hot Chicken, Brown's Diner, Edley's Bar-B-Que, and Resting Burrito Face distributed free meals. Pizza Hut employees on West End Avenue even lodged in a hotel to maintain service for their neighbors.
Chef Philip Krajeck of Folk, Rolf & Daughters, and Junior, highlighted the vulnerability of small, independent restaurants that lack large financial backing, contrasting them with larger chains. He emphasized the importance of these local businesses to the community and Tennessee's agricultural producers.
