Mysore Silk Frenzy: Shoppers Queue From 4 AM
20 Jan
Summary
- Hundreds queued from 4 AM outside a showroom for Mysore silk sarees.
- Strict rules, including a token system, manage overwhelming demand.
- Limited workforce and rigorous training cause supply shortages.

A massive surge in demand for authentic Mysore silk sarees has led to hundreds of people queuing outside a showroom from as early as 4:00 AM. A video capturing this sight outside the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) showroom has gone viral across social media platforms.
The sought-after sarees, with prices ranging from Rs 23,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh, have prompted KSIC to introduce strict measures. These include a token system for entry and a limit of one saree per customer to ensure fairer distribution.
The primary driver for this frenzy is a significant supply shortage. KSIC holds the exclusive Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Mysore silk, but production is hampered by a lack of skilled artisans and a lengthy, meticulous training process that takes six to seven months. All production is strictly handled in-house to maintain purity and quality.
