Narayana Murthy's Family Office Bets Big on Indian Manufacturing

Narayana Murthy's family office, Catamaran Ventures LLP, is making substantial new investments in India's manufacturing sector. Recent filings reveal fresh purchases in precision metal component manufacturers Sansera Engineering and M M Forgings. This strategic move signals a departure from its historical focus on software companies.

Catamaran Ventures has invested approximately ₹336 crore in Sansera Engineering, acquiring a 1.68% stake. This Bengaluru-based company is a leading global supplier of precision forged and machined components for automotive, aerospace, and other industries. Sansera reported strong performance in FY26, with net profit reaching ₹327 crore, aided by reduced interest costs after significant debt reduction.

The family office also acquired a 1.02% stake in M M Forgings, a Chennai-based steel forging veteran, for about ₹26 crore. M M Forgings, established in 1946, serves auto and industrial clients. While the company has faced challenges with increased borrowing and stretched receivables, recent financial results show early signs of a turnaround, including a positive swing in free cash flow in FY26.

This investment pattern, which includes previous entries into TD Power Systems and Vardhman Special Steels, reveals a clear theme: a growing portfolio in metal and machine shops. Catamaran's approach demonstrates conviction scaling, investing more in quality companies like Sansera and taking a smaller, contrarian position in potential turnarounds like M M Forgings, reflecting textbook portfolio discipline.
