Summary
- BEST employees launched an indefinite strike affecting millions of daily commuters.
- Union demands include merger with BMC budget and permanent jobs for contractual staff.
- BEST administration issued a warning under the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act.

Millions of Mumbai commuters are bracing for potential public transport disruptions as BEST employees commenced an indefinite strike on Friday. This action follows failed negotiations between 12 employee unions and the BEST administration regarding unresolved demands.
The strike, initiated by the BEST Sanyukt Kamgar Kruti Samiti, affects approximately 23 lakh daily passengers who rely on BEST bus services. Electricity-related services managed by BEST may also be impacted.
Union demands are multifaceted, including the merger of the BEST budget with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) budget, permanent employment for contractual drivers, improved salaries and benefits, the addition of 5,000 BEST-owned buses, and the clearance of pending dues for retired employees. Concerns have also been raised regarding delayed salaries, pending arrears, welfare facilities, working conditions, and perceived privatization of BEST services.
Despite an interim order from the industrial court restricting participation, union leaders have vowed to continue the protest. In response, the BEST undertaking has issued a circular under the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act, warning employees of potential legal action for participating in the strike.
BEST officials are actively monitoring the situation and have implemented additional arrangements to mitigate disruption. This includes deploying extra buses on key routes serving the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) area and increasing overall services to approximately 200 trips using 137 buses on Friday. Passengers are advised to check live bus updates and have alternative transport options ready.
